Project task
The client set the task of developing a mobile app for measuring heart rate (pulse) using a smartphone camera. The app had to detect the pulse quickly, easily and reliably — without external sensors, using only the standard camera and flash.
The goal is to create a tool that will help users monitor their health and activity without having to buy additional devices.
Product goals
- Enable pulse measurement right on the smartphone
- Make the interface clear for a wide audience
- Minimize the steps needed to start a measurement
- Ensure correct data reading in most real-world conditions
- Provide a basic measurement history and the ability to track changes
Core functionality
- Pulse measurement using the camera and flash
- Real-time view of the current pulse value
- Display of measurement history
- Clear charts and tips for interpreting the results
- Notifications about the need to repeat a measurement (in case of poor signal quality)
- Ability to export data
Stages of work
1. Research and analytics
- Study of methods for optical pulse measurement via a smartphone camera
- Analysis of existing apps and their weak points (noise, inaccuracy, complicated UX)
- Definition of stability and UX requirements
It was decided to put the main emphasis on simplicity and speed of measurement: one screen, a minimum of buttons, a maximum of results.
2. UX/UI design
Key design principles:
- A clean, minimalist interface
- Clear visual hints at every step
- Large interaction areas (convenient even on the move)
- Graphical visualization: pulse dynamics and measurement history
The UX was tested on users: it turned out that people launch the app again less often if the first measurement went smoothly and without unnecessary questions.
3. Development and testing
Technical tasks:
- Implementation of the algorithm for capturing images from the camera and processing signals
- Smoothing of fluctuations and noise filtering
- Handling of different lighting conditions
- Support for a wide range of Android devices
Testing was carried out on different smartphone models, including budget devices — it is important that the app works not only on top-end flagships.
Interim releases were tested within the team and with the participation of external users to obtain feedback.
Results
- The app has been published on Google Play
- Pulse measurement works stably in most conditions
- The UX is clear even to beginners
- User reviews note its simplicity and practicality
Key achievements
- Quick start of measurement: a measurement takes a minimum of actions
- Interface simplicity: even the first use goes without questions
- Reliability: the algorithms smooth out noise and ensure stable results
- Measurement history: makes it possible to track dynamics over time
Client review (approximate)
“The app turned out simple yet functional. For users who want to monitor their pulse without additional accessories, it is a convenient tool.”
