About the project
Wheels On is a mobile app for people who ride rollerblades, skateboards, bicycles or e-scooters. It records rides, shows speed, distance and calories, keeps personal records and lets you see other riders on the map. Besides the phone version, we designed a screen for Apple Watch.
The challenge
Typical fitness trackers focus on running and cycling, leaving rollerbladers and skaters on the sidelines. We needed to build an app that supports different types of riding, motivates users to set records and adds a social element — a way to find company for a ride. The visual language: a dark background, acid lime and purple accents, and energetic photography.
Welcome screen
The app opens with a full-screen photo of rollerblades and a short promise: “Track your activity and reach your fitness goals.” Key words are highlighted in the signature lime color, followed by a “Log in” button and a sign-up link for new users.
Ride
During a ride, the map screen takes center stage. At the top are three real-time metrics: speed, calories burned and heart rate. The route is drawn on the map, and other users are visible nearby: tapping an avatar opens a card with the person's name, the distance to them and a “Message” button. At the bottom are the ride timer and the distance covered, while a large lime button in the center of the bottom bar pauses the recording.
So riders don't have to pull out their phone on the move, the key metrics are mirrored on Apple Watch: duration, speed, distance and calories, plus buttons to pause and finish the ride.
Personal account
In the profile, users choose their sport — rollerblading, skateboarding, cycling or e-scooter riding — and this determines how the app tracks rides. Below are the ride history and a “Your records” block: maximum distance, duration and speed. At the top of the account is a Golden Wheels subscription banner offering to unlock all features of the full version.
Results
We designed a tracker suited to different types of riding: it records the route and ride metrics, keeps personal records, lets users contact other riders right from the map and works in tandem with Apple Watch. The bold visual identity sets the app apart from understated sports trackers and matches the young audience of rollerbladers and skaters.
